Appraisal photo checklist

Use this checklist before submitting an object for review, but back, underside, hardware, label, signature, and other hidden views are optional when they are not safely accessible. Do not move, lift, unframe, open, disassemble, clean, repair, test, or otherwise disturb an object for a photo. Leave it in place and submit the safe views you already have; Appraisily can request another safely accessible view later or recommend an appropriate professional. The materials help an appraiser understand the object, visible condition, context, and follow-up questions, but they do not by themselves prove authenticity or attribution, ownership or legal title, conservation treatment needs or a professional condition grade, or market value or a formal appraisal value conclusion.

Stay safe; fewer views are fine

Start with a front view, then add back, underside, side, mark, label, condition, or scale views only when they are safely accessible without moving or disturbing the object.

  • Complete front view
  • Safely accessible back, underside, side, marks, labels, or hardware
  • Condition details and a scale reference only when they can be captured safely

What these materials can and cannot show

Photos, marks, labels, inscriptions, receipts, prior reports, stories, provenance notes, condition observations, and comparable records are useful evidence inputs that can require verification or contain gaps.

  • Not proof of authenticity or attribution
  • Not proof of ownership or legal title
  • Not a conservation treatment decision, professional condition grade, market value, or formal appraisal value conclusion

Why it matters

Good photos shorten the review loop and help the appraiser decide which comparables are actually relevant.

  • Fewer clarification requests
  • Better condition context
  • Cleaner report evidence

How to use this page before ordering

This page gives search engines and visitors the same practical orientation: what the route is for, what evidence matters, and which next step best matches the appraisal decision.

Decision fit

Use the page to decide whether the object needs a signed appraisal report, a first-pass screener, a resource checklist, or direct support before ordering.

Evidence quality

Clear photos, dimensions, marks, provenance notes, condition details, and the intended use case help the reviewer choose stronger comparables and write a clearer report.

Report path

When formal documentation matters, the order should connect the object evidence, the value premise, the selected comparables, and any assumptions or limits in one shareable deliverable.
