PAULUS POTTER The Plough Horse. Etching, 1652. 158x240 mm; 6 1/4x9 1/2 inches, thread margins. Second state (of 3). Foolscap watermark. Ex-collection John Bernard (Lugt 1419, verso). A superb, richly-inked and early impression of this very scarce etching. Before his untimely death by tuberculosis at 28 years old, Potter (1625-1654) gained widespread popularity in and around Amsterdam through his oeuvre of some 100 paintings and approximately 20 etchings, nearly all of which represent horses, livestock and landscapes. Hollstein 12.
