ATTRIBUTED TO BRUCE TALBERT (SCOTTISH, 1838-1881): A RARE THIRD QUARTER 19TH CENTURY GOTHIC REVIVAL BRASS AND AGATE MOUNTED MANTEL CLOCK PROBABLY MADE BY HART, SON, PEARD & CO. OR COX & CO the pierced, triangular case surmounted by an agate finial and with two agate cabochons flanking the silvered Roman dial, the single train timepiece movement stamped 'G.V. 11215', with lever platform escapement, 32cm high This clock is typical of those designed by Talbert, incorporating agate into the design, such as those sold in the Roy David's Collection, Bonhams, London, 4 March 2015, lots 255 and 256; one of these clocks was similarly stamped 'G.V.' to the backplate. (sold for £6250). Talbert was trained as an architect but became one of the leading designers in the Aesthetic Movement and reformed Gothic style. The design for this clock was produced in around 1871 and features in the 'Illustrated Catalogue of Gothic and Other Artistic Domestic Furniture, Fittings, Decorations, Upholstery and Metal Work' published in London by Cox & Sons in 1872. Two sizes of the present clock are known, this is the smaller size. An example is in the Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna, which retains the original receipt for its purchase from Hart, Son, Peard & Co., who may have been a subcontractor of Cox & Co. Cox & Co. exhibited at the International Exposition in London in 1862, as well as at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial and were known for employing significant designers such as Talbert at the time.
