Mark Kostabi (American, b. 1960) The Painter's Epiphany, 2023, Oil on Canvas auction lot image

Lot description

This original oil on canvas painting, titled The Painter's Epiphany, is by American artist Mark Kostabi (b. 1960). The composition features one of Kostabi's signature faceless, monochromatic figures in a contemplative pose reminiscent of Rodin's The Thinker. The figure is seated on a modern office chair before a large, blank easel holding a thin paintbrush. Vibrant, thick drips of yellow, orange, red, and green paint accent the figure's body, its conical hat, and various architectural elements in the background. The scene is set in a surreal landscape under a dark sky dominated by a large, luminous full moon. Stylized geometric and architectural forms appear on the horizon. In the foreground, three tubes of paint and a discarded brush sit upon a blue surface next to fragments of wooden geometric structures. The work is characterized by the artist's use of clean lines, smooth gradients, and a high-contrast color palette. The painting is signed and dated KOSTABI 2023 in red paint at the lower left. The reverse of the canvas features a large, stylized signature MARK KOSTABI, the title THE PAINTER'S EPIPHANY, the date 2023. A secondary inscription at the bottom center of the verso reads 10-31-23 - GENEVA accompanied by a compass symbol. The canvas is stretched over a wooden frame with a central horizontal brace and is unframed. Dimensions: 39.50"L x 1.50"W x 51.00"H Weight: 10.00 lb 8.00oz
