Lot description
Buckeye Tree, California, circa 1870. Albumen silver print, depicting a monumental California buckeye tree (Aesculus californica) almost entirely overshadowing a modest wooden house. Watkins’ clarity of detail and balanced structure are characteristic of his Western landscape photography, in which nature and early settlement appear in a delicate state of coexistence.
