Prepare the bibliographic photos
Photograph the cover, spine, title page, copyright page, publisher details, limitation page, illustrations, plates, maps, inscriptions, and dust jacket flaps.
Do not crop out small text. First-edition points and issue details are often publisher-specific.
Condition changes value quickly
Missing dust jackets, loose hinges, foxing, water damage, library marks, rebinding, trimmed pages, and missing plates can materially change value. Photograph flaws clearly.
Keep receipts, letters, bookplates, boxes, and ownership notes with the book.
Vet the appraiser before shipping
Ask whether the appraiser handles rare books, manuscripts, maps, ephemera, family Bibles, or modern first editions. Confirm fees, insurance, report format, and turnaround time.
For legal, estate, donation, or insurance use, request a written report with assumptions and comparable evidence.
