Photograph bibliographic evidence
Show the cover, spine, title page, copyright page, publisher details, edition statements, limitation pages, illustrations, plates, maps, and dust jacket flaps.
For first editions, small publisher-specific points can matter, so do not crop or blur text.
Condition and completeness matter
Loose hinges, missing pages, foxing, water damage, library marks, trimmed pages, rebound covers, and missing dust jackets can materially change value. Photograph flaws clearly.
Keep boxes, receipts, letters, bookplates, and ownership notes with the book.
Pick the right book specialist
Rare books, manuscripts, maps, comics, ephemera, and family Bibles can require different expertise. Ask whether the appraiser handles your category and report purpose.
For insurance, estate, donation, or sale planning, request a written report with definitions, assumptions, and comparable evidence.
