Oil on canvas Switzerland, 1926 Frédéric Rouge (1867-1950) - Swiss Painter Signed lower left 'F. Rouge. 1926' Overall dimensions framed: 66 x 124.5 cm Good condition Provenance: from a Viennese private collection A romantic landscape painted by Rouge with great virtuosity; the works by the Swiss painter fetch up to 26,000 Euro at auctions This large-scale oil painting by Frederic Rouge shows an impressive mountain landscape. The Vaud Alps, a recurring motif in the Swiss painter's oeuvre, majestically throne in the background. A rich green plain of forests and meadows stretches of at the foot of the mountains. Amidst this impressive nature one discerns two famers with a horse-drawn hay cart. The composition is defined by a delicate colour scheme and a diffused incidence of light veiling the mountains in soft rays of sun. Indifferent to contemporary artistic tendencies, Rouge has always remained faithful to his own conception of art capturing the soul of the Vaud countryside in his paintings. The painting by Frédéric Rouge is in good condition with slight surface marks. The surface shows extensive fine craquelure. There is some minor overpainting along the mountains. There is a tiny hole, hardy visible, in the canvas in the lower right corner. The work is signed lower left 'F. Rouge. In 1926'. The frame shows colour and material loss. Framed the work measures 66 x 124.5 cm. The stretcher frame measures 54 x 133 cm. Frédéric Rouge (1867-1950) Frédéric Rouge was born in Aigle, Switzerland in 1867. From a very young age he showed talent as a draughtsman. At the age of 15 he began an apprenticeship with the then well-known animal and genre painter Walter Vigier. Rouge studied at the School of Applied Arts in Basel and later at the Académie Julian in Paris before returning to Aigle where he opened his studio. His numerous oil paintings show the influence of the Swiss painters Albert Anker, Frank Buchser and Karl Stauffer-Bern. With his landscape, genre and animal paintings Rouge became the most popular painter of the Vaud Alps. In 1903 the artist settled in Ollon, where he created many paintings of the surrounding landscapes and designed posters and wine labels as an illustrator. Frédéric Rouge's works exhibit the academic style of the 19th Century but impress with a skilful painting technique.
