Lot description

John MacLauchlan Milne (1886-1957) PERTH FROM CORSIE HILL Signed l.r. and titled verso, watercolour 37 x 54cm John MacLauchlin Milne was born in Edinburgh and later studied at the Edinburgh College of Art. His early works focus on landscapes showing the influence of his father, Joseph Milne. He was in the Royal Flying Corps during World War I and during these years, and subsequent years, spent much time in France. In Paris, he encountered the work of the Impressionists, in particular Cézanne. Along with Peploe, Cadell and Duncan Grant, he spent much time travelling throughout France, and this period is seen as critical in his subsequent work. Back in Scotland, he moved within the circle of the Scottish Colourists, and his later works display their influences. As World War II approached, he settled on the Isle of Arran where he remained until his death.
