THE KANGXI EMPEROR'S NANXUN TU, ('SOUTHERN INSPECTION TOUR'), NO. 6: VISIT TO MOUNT JINSHAN BY WANG HUI (1632-1717) QING DYNASTY, KANGXI PERIOD, 1691-1697 ink and colour on silk a fragment of a longer scroll depicting the Kangxi Emperor's visit to the Jiangtian Si temple on Mount Jinshan in the middle of the Yangtze River, on the far left the Emperor depicted standing on a large terrace under a yellow canopy wearing a blue robe below the towering temple on the peak of the island, escorted by his large entourage of officials dotting the island, the island surrounded by ships flying the imperial banner, with smaller boats in the distance sailing towards the island, the middle of the painting depicting the bustling walled city of Guazhou with its gate festooned with bright bunting along the boat-filled banks of the Yangtze, further up the river to the far right of the painting the small mist-shrouded island of Jiaoshan depicted with a narrow staircase rising to a small pavilion at the peak, the now separated original outer silk brocade wrapper with yellow title slip reading Nanxun Tu di liu juan, Xun Guazhou de jiang deng Jinshan ji Changzhou fu ('Painting of the Southern Tour, Scroll number six, From Guazhou, across the Yangtze River, up Jinshan and through Changzhou Prefecture') 68 by 362 cm., 26 3/4 by 142 1/2 in.
