Lot description

Jules Rimet FIFA World Cup Trophy Replica by Andrew Edwards - As part of the process of creating Gordon Banks' statue in 2008, sculptor Andy Edwards was granted special access by The National Football Museum to study up close and meticulously measure every detail of the Jules Rimet FIFA World Cup from behind the inch thick security glass doors. The result was a millimetre-perfect replica of a replica. The original trophy, won outright by Brazil in 1970 and subsequently stolen in 1983 never to be seen again is believed to have been melted down by thieves. The replica held by The National Football Museum has been tested and analysed by Manchester University and proved to be gold plated bronze, the one and only copy made cast by George Bird and famously switched into Nobby Stiles' hands by an attendant policeman. Andy's copy was cast in the exact same method and materials, 24ct gold plated bronze by Lunts Castings in Birmingham to jewellery standards. This is believed to be the most accurate and closest to the real Jules Rimet World Cup trophy as possible. Even the base, originally thought to be the incredibly rare Amazonian blue granite used for altars and the like recreated by George Bird in scagliola style pigmented resin was reproduced uniquely in Edwards 2008 masterpiece. Approx. 32cm height from the bottom of base. After being presented to both Gordon Banks and Pelé for inspection in 2008 at the unveiling of the Gordon Banks monument, this remarkable artefact has now been brought out of private collection and offered for auction. The Jules Rimet Trophy was awarded to FIFA World Cup winners from 1930 until 1970 and was named in honor of Jules Rimet, the FIFA president responsible for establishing the World Cup tournament. Designed by French sculptor Abel Lafleur, the trophy depicted Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, and remains one of the most recognizable symbols in football history. Brazil was awarded the original trophy permanently following its third World Cup triumph in 1970.Andy Edwards (born 1964) is a renowned British sculptor. He is best known for creating large-scale public sculptures that celebrate cultural, sporting, and historical figures. His work is particularly recognized for its realism, storytelling, and ability to capture personality and movement. Some of his most famous works include: The Beatles Statue at Liverpool's Pier Head, one of the most photographed public sculptures in the UK. The bronze group depicts all four Beatles walking together and was unveiled in 2015, Sir Alex Ferguson Statue in Aberdeen, 'The Fine Lady' in Bradbury, 'All Together Now' commemorating the 1914 Christmas Truce during the First World War, Bee Gees Statue, unveiled in Douglas on the Isle of Man in 2021, Bob Marley Statue in Liverpool, Brian Clough and Peter Taylor Statue at Derby County's stadium, Tameside's World Cup Heroes, unveiled in 2010 and has recently been commissioned to create a major sculpture of Ozzy Osbourne in France.
