Lawrence faced numerous obstacles in publishing Lady Chatterley's Lover, ultimately turning to a small avant-garde publisher, Tipografia Guintina in Florence, to circumvent British obscenity laws. With the assistance of Florentine bookseller Pino Orioli, the volume was then distributed from Florence. Lawrence planned to sell the one thousand numbered copies for £2 each, and sent order forms to friends in America and Europe who acted as agents in distributing copies. By December 1928, Lawrence had sold nearly all one thousand copies despite the fact that the novel was about to be suppressed in London and was stopped from entering the United States.
