Lot description

Joseph Margulies (American, 1896–1984). Homeless Philosopher. Original etching on paper, pencil-signed lower right. Published by Associated American Artists, New York. The composition depicts a contemplative bearded elder in a broad-brimmed hat, rendered with the artist's characteristic economy of line and expressive crosshatching. Margulies was a noted portrait painter and printmaker whose works are represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian institutions, and numerous major American museums. This etching is one of the artist's highly regarded character studies, a subject for which he became particularly known. Sight: 10.25 x 9.75 in. Frame: 20 x 16 in. Provenance: From the estate of a distinguished Georgia physician, whose collection of fine art, antiques, jewelry, and decorative objects was carefully assembled over a period of decades. Condition: The etching appears to be in very good overall condition. Sheet exhibits light age toning consistent with age and framing. Pencil signature remains visible at lower right. No significant foxing, tears, or creases. Mat and frame present well with minor expected wear.
