Alphonse Mucha The Flowers / Rose vintage decorative panel 1898 40.25 h x 16.75 w in (102 x 43 cm) One flower rises above the rest when the air is filled with romance: the Rose. And Mucha's personification of that fleshy blossom stands on its own, "proud and closed in her strictly formal pose" (Mucha/Art Nouveau, p. 196). But lest we judge this constrained beauty too harshly, let's not forget that the rose, of all the avidly sought blooms, is the only one equipped with thorns to protect her from the uninvited. Mucha's alluring yet restrained vision calls to the fore artistically what is often overlooked in casual observations of nature. Imp. F. Champenois, Paris (not shown) Literature: Rennert/Weill, 49; Lendl/Paris, 69; Mucha/Art Nouveau, 50b; PAI-LXXXIX, 314 This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.
