Leonetto Cappiello Champagne de Castellane : Maquette c. 1931 gouache on board 35.375 h x 25 w in (90 x 63 cm) Champagne de Castellane remains an iconic French house whose global distribution made it one of the most reliable anchors of Leonetto Cappiello's career. Over years of collaboration, the artist continually developed imaginative figures and striking displays for the Epernay-based brand. This original maquette offers a tamer, more domestic counterpoint to his highly theatrical, full-scale campaigns. Here, a bottle sits atop a vibrant mound of sparkling, emerald-toned grapes, flanked by a stately, vividly colored rooster. While Cappiello frequently deployed the proud rooster as a central agent of commercial energy, this composition positions it demurely in the background. His saturated use of color brings the scene to life, utilizing highly luminous tones to frame the muted gray and black glass of the bottle signifying that the liquid within is anything but humble. Signed to lower left 'L. Cappiello'. Provenance: Former Collection of Champagne de Castellane | Private Collection This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.
