Lot description

Artwork Description: Claude Weisbuch is a French painter and printmaker who studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and later taught printmaking at the École des Beaux-Arts in Saint-Étienne. In 1961, he received the French Critics' Prize, with his main themes being figures such as musicians, riders, actors, and clowns, accompanied by bodily movements. Created in 1983, "The Violinist" is an expansion of Weisbuch's sculptural language on a large oil painting canvas. The vertically elongated composition places the figure slightly to the right, leaving bold blank space on the left. The nearly horizontal form of the violin intersects with the diagonal motion of the bow across the canvas, transforming the outward force of the performer's body into visual directionality. The brushstrokes are concentrated on the face, left hand, and bow-holding right hand, while the torso, chair, and music stand are decomposed into continuous brown lines. Rather than fixing the precise form of the figure, it expresses the overlapping postures and rhythms that continuously change during the performance on a single canvas. The limited color palette, based on ochre tones, also distances itself from realistic spatial depiction, highlighting the speed and intensity of the lines. The intersection of sharp line drawing akin to etching and the unique brushstrokes and paint thickness of oil painting is also significant. If the vast blank space is seen as "silence" and the intensely overlapping brown brush lines as "sound," this work can be said to depict the moment music is born from silence, rather than a portrait of the performer. The musician theme, repeatedly pursued by Weisbuch, is physically and dramatically presented through an F50-sized oil painting. The work does not depict the individuality of the performer but rather humanity immersed in music itself.
