Lot description
A large creamware earthenware dish featuring a scalloped and lobed rim accented with a bold orange-ochre painted band. The interior is decorated with a hand-painted scene titled The Shepherds Christmas, depicting a shepherd in a blue cloak standing with a dog outside a thatched shelter amidst a wintry, snow-covered landscape with a flock of sheep in the distance. The painting is executed in a loose, painterly style using a muted palette of grays, browns, and reds. The scene is based on a work by the British watercolorist Edward Duncan. The reverse of the dish bears a handwritten inscription in reddish-brown ink reading The Shepherds Christmas after Duncan. Several labels are present on the underside: a descriptive paper label identifying the piece as Wedgwood creamware by Emile Lessore; and a circular collection label for the Rubin Collection.
