Lot description
A late 19th-century creamware two-handled vase produced by the Wedgwood factory and hand-decorated by artist Emile Lessore. The vessel features an ovoid body supported by a short pedestal foot, leading to a waisted neck and flared rim. Two scroll-form handles with an ochre glaze are attached at the shoulder. The body is decorated in a painterly style with scenes of cherubs. One side shows two putti with grapevines and a cluster of grapes, while the reverse depicts three putti at play, including one holding a theatrical mask. The palette consists of reddish-brown and ochre tones with accents of blue and green. Horizontal ochre bands highlight the rim, neck, and base. The scene on the front is signed E. Lessore in the lower right. The underside of the base features an impressed WEDGWOOD mark. The base also retains several historical collection and auction labels, including a round Skinner auction label (2513, 264), a Burris Collection label (18), a Bleier Collection label (CR358), and a Rubin Collection label.
