Lot description
This original mixed media work, executed in watercolor and gouache with metallic gold highlights on paper, serves as a preparatory study for the Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre line. The composition illustrates verses from the poem The Fairies by William Allingham, depicting a whimsical nocturnal landscape with stylized imps and winged fairies perched among trees. The central illustration is framed by an intricate gold-toned Celtic knotwork border. A monogram featuring the intertwined letters D, M, and J is present in the lower right corner of the image. Housed in a modern ornate gilt-composite frame with a gold-toned fabric mat, the verso includes a typed descriptive label, a circular Rubin Collection provenance sticker, and a cutout window revealing an original handwritten poem fragment on a separate paper slip.
