Lot description

The Common Book of Brayer Illuminated with the works of great painters Raphael, Horsley, Overbeck, Pussin). Published in London by John Murray, 1845. Printed by the Vizetelly Brothers. The Vignettes, Borders, and ornaments are designed by Architect Owen Jones. Bound in full red leather with gilt decorations on covres, spine and dentelle. All edges gilt. Blue endpapers. with the bookplate of typographer and book collector Ruari McLean (1917-2006) (Wiki; blog: A Visit with Ruari McLean, Oak Knoll Books) The 1845 illuminated edition of the Book of Common Prayer utilized chromolithography, a pioneering color printing technique executed by the Vizetelly Brothers & Co., to produce multi-hued borders, initials, and ornaments without the need for hand-painting, thereby enabling more efficient mass production of ornate designs inspired by medieval manuscripts. This process involved transferring Owen Jones's designs onto lithographic stones, with separate stones prepared for each color—typically including gold, blue, red, green, and others—allowing for the vivid reproduction of intricate floral and geometric patterns surrounding the text.
