Lot description

Seong Moy (Chinese 1921 – 2013)"Mid Summer Bathers"Woodcut 1963. Chinese, American Seong Moy was a highly influential painter and printmaker known for blending traditional Chinese art forms with Western Abstract Expressionism. His woodcuts and paintings feature fluid, kinetic lines and rich colors. "Mid-Summer Bathers" is part of his mid-century body of work and is held in permanent museum collections, such as the Syracuse University Art Museum. In this piece, the bodies of the bathers are heavily stylized. They are abstracted into geometric patches, curved shapes, and layered silhouettes that blend into the surrounding environment. The piece is pencil signed "S Moy" lower right, "Artist proof 1/5" in the lower middle, and titled "Mid Summer Bathers" lower left.
