Lot description

Thomas Luny (1759–1837) 'Shipwreck at The Ness', oil on panel, depicting a shipwreck scene with a vessel in distress on a turbulent sea, small figures gathering on the shore. The scene has been identified as The Ness at Teignmouth, Devon, viewed from around Holcombe, the stricken vessel presumably attempting to make the harbour at Teignmouth — a well-documented hazard in the historical records of that coast. Luny was a prolific British maritime painter who trained under Francis Holman and is celebrated for his dramatic seascapes and ship portraits. The composition is characteristic of his mature period, when he lived nearby and was going blind. Small format. Circa 1830.
