John Brock Lear Jr (1910-2008) Watercolor "A Buckinghamshire House at Penn Street" 2002. Painted after a similar scene by Helen Allingham. 9.5"h x 15.5"w. Frame 13.5"h x 20.5"w This finely detailed landscape is a "record" by noted Philadelphia artist John Brock Lear Jr., created during his later career in 2002. The work is a meticulous study after the Victorian watercolorist Helen Allinghamâs famous depiction of a thatched cottage in Penn Street, Buckinghamshire. Known for his surrealist figurative works, Lear also maintained a lifelong practice of documenting the British countryside, using a signature blend of watercolor and colored pencil to capture architectural and botanical details with extraordinary precision. This piece features the iconic blacksmithâs cottage at Penn Street, rendered with the soft, luminous palette characteristic of Learâs English series.
