Lot description
A stone lithograph c.1971 by the great late Alaskan artist, Fred Machetanz (1908-2002) entitled "Now Back in '98". The work depicts George Smock, an 80-year old Alaskan sourdough and prospector who the artist tried to contact for nearly six years after seeing his picture in a newspaper. Finally, through a rather extraordinary coincidence, George was located and prevailed upon to visit the artist at his studio home, High Ridge. He drove into the clearing in his battered old pickup, decorated in a unique fashion with a magnificent set of moose antlers atop the windshield. George climbed out and he had scarcely introduced himself when he sat down upon a cut section of spruce beside the original part of the artist's studio and began recounting his life in Alaska. George was a hard rock prospector, and later staked a claim in the remote and ruggedly lovely Chitina Valley of south-central Alaska. The work is marked Edition-100, hand-signed lower right, matted in white, and shrink-wrapped; information about the work is affixed en verso. Measures approximately 24.5" x 20.5" overall with a sight view 18.5" x 14.5".
