Myra Kukiiyaut "Monster and Birds" Baker Lake Stonecut Print auction lot image

Lot description

A signed and numbered limited edition stonecut and stencil print entitled Monster and Birds by celebrated Inuit artist Myra Kukiiyaut (1929-2006), depicting a whimsical blue spirit figure with bold black eyes accompanied by two stylized birds rendered in green and brown. Characterized by fluid forms and a playful, dreamlike quality, the composition exemplifies Kukiiyaut's distinctive visual language rooted in Inuit oral traditions and spiritual narratives. The fantastical imagery reflects the artist's fascination with birds, animals, shamans, and supernatural beings inspired by the legends and stories of her homeland. Born in Baker Lake (Qamani'tuaq), Nunavut, Myra Kukiiyaut was among the most recognized artists associated with the Sanavik Co-operative and the flourishing Baker Lake graphic tradition. Her imaginative compositions are noted for their rhythmic forms and expressive treatment of spirit figures and wildlife, blending ancient beliefs with a highly personal artistic vision. Her works have been acquired by major institutions including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and remain highly sought after for their originality and embodiment of Inuit storytelling traditions. Titled Monster and Birds, numbered 25/40, dated, and signed lower right by the artist, the print also bears the official blind stamp of the Sanavik Co-operative Fine Arts Centre in Baker Lake. Housed in a simple silver-toned frame, it measures approximately 26.25" x 33" overall with a sight view of 23.75" x 30.25".
