Due to their communist beliefs, the couple was interned in concentration camps, but Lea escaped Europe and immigrated to the Land of Israel in 1940 aboard the illegal immigrant ship "Pacific." During 1942–1943 she created the drawing series "In the Valley of Slaughter, " among her best-known works. Of the series, Grundig testified: "The task was as if imposed upon me — I was compelled to draw it. I was compelled to cry out for those whose voices had been silenced." Concurrently she drew cartoons for the Communist Party newspaper of Palestine, landscape drawings, and works inspired by kibbutz life. In the late 1940s, upon learning that her husband Hans had survived the camps, she left Israel and returned to Germany, leaving behind a significant portion of her work.
