Antal Berkes, Hungarian 1874-1938- Montmartre, Paris; oil on panel, signed 'Berkes A.' (lower right), 24.8 x 34.4 cm. (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Berkes studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest between 1889 and 1894. The present work is a typical example of Berkes' characteristic street scenes, which often depicted Budapest, Vienna, and, most frequently, his adopted city of Paris. A similar scene of Montmartre by the artist appeared at Christie's, London, 22 March 2011, lot 733.
