Lot description
Alfred Heaton Cooper, British 1863-1929- Sea caves at Ballybunion, County Kerry; pencil and watercolour heightened with scratching out on paper, signed and dated 'A. Heaton. Cooper. 1915.' (lower right), 18.2 x 25 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Alfred Heaton Cooper was an English watercolour artist, best known for his views of the Lake District and Norway. He trained briefly under Sir George Clausen (1852-1944), and developed his style through travel and direct observation, often working outdoors. Ancient caves and underground passages have existed beneath Ballybunion in County Kerry, Ireland for millennia. These chambers lie beneath the cliffs and are believed to date from the Iron Age to the early Christian period. By the 19th century, Ballybunion's caves had become a popular attraction. They were visited by the English poet Lord Alfred Tennyson and documented by geologist William Ainsworth. Another of Heaton Cooper's works, also dated 1915, depicts these caves from a slightly different viewpoint.
