Lot description
Gustave Léonard de Jonghe, Belgian 1829-1893- Coastal landscape, with waves lapping onto the shore; oil on canvas laid down on board, signed 'G. de Jonghe' (lower right), 16.4 x 21.4 cm. Provenance: with Leighton Fine Art, Buckinghamshire; where purchased by the present owner (Private Collection, UK). Note: de Jonghe began his training under his father, the artist Jan Baptiste de Jonghe (1785-1844), before studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where his teachers included François-Joseph Navez (1787-1869). He regularly exhibited at the Brussels and Paris Salons in the mid-19th century, and was particularly well-known for his scenes of elegant sitters in elaborate interiors. Nevertheless, the artist did produce coastal landscapes, including, for example, his oil which sold at J.P.Osenat Fontainebleau on 18 June 2023, lot 162 (€2,520). The present work - finely handled - is likely a sketch he conceived, rapidly, whilst travelling.
