Lot description
Alfred Walter Bayes, British 1832-1909- Portrait of a Civil War soldier, seated full-length, holding a sword; oil on canvas, signed 'AW Bayes' (lower right), 40.8 x 30.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Alfred Walter Bayes is not to be confused with his son, the Camden Town painter Walter John Bayes (1869-1956). He started his career as a self-taught portrait painter, before enrolling at Heatherley's Art School in 1863. The present work is an example of the artist's peaceful, contemplative scenes, typically featuring figures in historical or regional costumes.
