Lot description

Giuseppe Amisani, Italian 1881-1941- Portrait of Margaret Forsyth (1927-2016), aged 10, seated three-quarter length, wearing a yellow tulle dress with blue ribbons; oil on canvas, signed and dated 'G Amisani / 1937' (lower left), 95.2 x 70.2 cm. Provenance: The sitter; and thence by descent to the present owner. Note: Amisani was a prolific and highly sought-after society portraitist who enjoyed considerable success throughout Europe over the course of his career. He studied under Cesare Tallone (1853-1919) and Vespasiano Bignami (1841-1929) at the Accademia di Brera in Milan. The present work exhibits the distinctively loose brushstrokes which impart his works with a particularly atmospheric quality, and which characterise much of Amisani's output. See, for example, his portraits which sold at Il Ponte Auctions, Milan, on 29 October 2014, lot 158 (€25,000) and on 11 November 2020, lot 1321 (€11,250). The sitter, Margaret Forsyth, (née Evans), was born and raised in Milan and went on to study Fine Art at the Accademia di Brera, the very institution where Amisani himself had trained.
