Lot description
Charles Maurin, French 1856-1914- Portrait of Jeanne Laurent, bust-length, in profile, wearing a blue dress with a white lace frill and a blue ribbon in her hair; oil on canvas, signed 'Maurin' (lower left), 41 x 32.5 cm. Provenance: The collection of Henry Laurent; Thence by descent. Private Collection, UK. Note: Maurin studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jules Lefebvre (1836-1911) and at the Académie Julian, where he later taught. He was close friends with contemporary artists including Félix Vallotton (1865-1925) and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), and shared a two-man exhibition with Toulouse-Lautrec at the Boussod et Valadon Gallery in Paris in 1893. The composition of the present work bears a striking similarity to Maurin's portrait of a lady, presumed to be Sarah Bernhardt, which sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 1 February 2019, lot 455 ($50,000). Henry Laurent was Maurin's most important patron and acquired over 1,000 of his works at the recommendation of Edgar Degas (1834-1917). The lot is accompanied by an invitation to the funeral of Jeanne Laurent, who died aged 22 in 1901.
