Lot description
Alexandre Bida, French 1813-1895- Study of a lady wearing an elegant gown, standing full-length, in profile; black and white chalk and grey wash on buff paper, signed 'Bida' (lower right), 24.4 x 18.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, France (descendants of Jules Simon 1814-1896). Private Collection, UK. Note: Bida studied under Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) and was best known for his Orientalist scenes, having travelled and worked across the Middle East over the course of his career, visiting Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon, and Palestine. The present work is a charming example of the artist's closely-studied and delicately-shaded drawings, and recalls, for example, a similar drawing by the artist in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore [37.1415], with this approach also exhibited in his 'The Chess Players' which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 25 April 2023, lot 17 (£34,290).
