Lot description

Frank Dadd, RI ROI, British 1851-1929- Placing Queen Victoria's Coffin on the Gun-Carriage at Victoria Station; pencil, pen, black ink, and wash heightened with white on paper, signed with initials 'FD' (lower left), 27.1 x 40.4 cm. Note: The present work is a particularly significant illustration for 'The Graphic', and commemorates a pivotal moment in the history of the paper and of the nation as a whole. The scene depicts Queen Victoria's (1819-1901) coffin being placed on the Gun-Carriage whilst a crowd of mourners, which includes Edward VII (1841-1910), Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany (1859-1941), and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia (1868-1918), looks on. 'The Graphic' was the leading illustrated paper of Victorian and Edwardian England. Founded in 1869 by an artist engraver, William Luson Thomas (1830-1900), in its heyday the paper sold hundreds of thousands of copies weekly and employed over a thousand people. The number and quality of the artists employed on the staff of 'The Graphic' was unprecedented on any periodical before or since. Although photography existed and developed considerably during the paper's history, the ability of its small army of artist reporters and engravers to capture the detailed life and atmosphere of a scene meant that pen and ink continued to reign supreme in illustrated periodicals until the late 1920s.
