Lot description

Anton Laurids Johannes Dorph, Danish 1831-1914- Street musicians, with a lady and a baby leaning over a wall; oil on canvas, signed and dated 'A Dorph 1890[?]' (lower left), 31.2 x 19.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Dorph studied at the Danish Academy under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (1783-1853) before receiving lessons from Wilhelm Marstrand (1810-1873). The present work is a typical example of Dorph's genre scenes, often featuring figures in regional dress going about their daily business, as, for example, in the artist's oils which sold at Bruun Rasmussen, Copenhagen, on 20 September 2016, lot 116 (£1,380 hammer), and on 26 February 2013, lot 72 (£1,872 hammer).
