Lot description
George Chinnery, British 1774-1852- Portrait of a gentleman wearing a brown coat and red cravat; oil on canvas, 23 x 18.4 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 12 March 1986, lot 62; where acquired by the present owner. Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 28 April 2021, lot 434. Note: Chinnery travelled to Chennai (Madras) in 1802, and from there to Kolkata (Calcutta), where he established himself as the pre-eminent portraitist of the British community in India, before moving to Macau, where he was based between 1825 until his death in 1852. The present work is a fine example of Chinnery’s portraits, depicting an elegantly dressed gentleman with rosy cheeks, and bright, lively eyes. The sitter engages the viewer with a subtle, knowing smile.
