Lot description
George Morland, British 1763-1804- Elegant figures seated in a landscape, with a picnic laid out on a stack of haybales; oil on canvas, 63.5 x 76.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Although perhaps best known for his scenes of rural figures in wooded landscapes, Morland also produced a number of conversation pieces featuring elegantly-dressed sitters, of which the present work is a particularly charming example. Other strikingly similar examples of this approach include the artist's 'Anglers' Repast' and his 'Party Angling', both in the Yale Center for British Art [YCBA/lido-TMS-38765 and B2001.2.22], as well as his 'Tea Garden' in the Fogg Museum [1974.16].
