Lot description
John Rathbone, British c.1750-1807- A wooded landscape with a ruined moated castle, and figures ferrying across the water; oil on canvas, signed 'J. Rathbone' (lower centre), 51.7 x 66.1 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Bonhams, London, 4 December 1997, lot 1 (£2,000 hammer). Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 4 May 2012, lot 133 (£4,375). Private Collection, UK. Note: Rathbone's works exhibit similarities to those of his contemporary George Morland (1763-1804), and indeed he collaborated on a number of occasions with Morland and Julius Caesar Ibbetson (1759-1817), with these two artists sometimes painting the figures in his landscapes. In the present work, Rathbone presents a typically romanticised depiction of rural simplicity, whilst also gesturing towards the expansive Classical Italianate landscapes of painters such as Claude Lorrain (1600-1682). Between 1785 and 1806 Rathbone exhibited 48 landscapes at the Royal Academy and two at the Society of Artists.
