Lot description
Paul Sandby Munn, RWS, British 1773-1845- View of a house with a watermill in Dolgellau, Merionethshire; pencil, grey ink, and wash on paper, signed and dated 'PS Munn 1840' and inscribed 'A. Dolgelly / Merionethshire' (lower left), 17 x 20.3 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Munn was the son of James Munn (1738-1818), a carriage decorator and landscape painter, and was named after his godfather, the watercolourist Paul Sandby (1731-1809), who provided Munn with his early artistic instruction. He became a close friend of the artist John Sell Cotman (1782-1842), with the two embarking on numerous sketching tours together, at home and abroad. The town of Dolgellau, also Anglicised as Dolgelly, serves as the main base for climbers of Cader Idris in Snowdonia, a mountain which was a popular subject for 18th-century watercolourists, and which Munn depicted on multiple occasions.
