Lot description
John Ruskin, British 1819-1900- Watermill and cottages by a stream; pencil on paper, 11 x 14.9 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 30 November 2000, lot 344 (£2,160). Property from a Distinguished British Private Collection. Note: Ruskin's output as a draughtsman is highly varied, much like his work generally, befitting his reputation as a multi-talented polymath. Nevertheless, he did produce a number of architectural studies and landscapes which recall the present work, such as his view of Verona which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 10 July 1997, lot 133 (£15,525), his view of 'Chateau Colombier' which sold in the same rooms on 14 June 2001, lot 41 (£25,800), and another of his landscapes which sold at Christie's, London, on 16 December 2009, lot 66 (£2,750).
