Lot description
Herbert Menzies Marshall, RWS, British 1841-1913- A pair of views of London: Approach to Westminster; and Morning in Whitehall; each pencil and watercolour heightened with scratching out on paper, each signed 'Herbert Marshall' (lower left), the first 25.3 x 35.9 cm., the second 21.2 x 30.4 cm., a pair (2). Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 24 May 2002, lot 57 (£3,585, the first) and lot 58 (£5,377, the second); where purchased by the present owner (A Distinguished British Private Collection). Literature: G.E. Mitton, 'The Scenery of London', London, 1905, the first illustrated in colour facing p.16., the second illustrated in colour facing p.90. Note: Marshall studied architecture in Paris under Charles-Auguste Questel (1807-1888), an experience which undoubtedly informed his depiction of urban landscapes. He produced topographical illustrations for a number of publications, including 'The Scenery of London' (1905) and 'Cathedral Cities of France' (1907). These depictions of the London skyline are characteristic (and particularly fine examples) of the artist's approach, particularly in their overall hazy and romantic atmosphere.
