Lot description
Salomon Leonardus Verveer, Dutch 1813-1876- View of a Dutch town from the river, with figures on the shore; oil on canvas, signed and dated 'S.L Verveer 1833' (lower right), 51 x 62.3 cm. Provenance: with M. Newman, London. The Private Collection of the Berens Family. Note: Verveer trained under Bartholomeus van Hove (1790-1880) and went on to work with Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch (1824-1903), a fellow artist from The Hague. Verveer later taught the painter Frederik Hendrik Kaemmerer (1839-1902). The present work is a particularly charming example of the artist's bustling city scenes, viewed from the river. It recalls, for example, Verveer's paintings which sold at Lempertz, Cologne, on 19 November 2016, lot 1524 (€8,680), and at Sotheby's, Amsterdam, on 22 April 1997, lot 56 (£6,733).
