Note: Verboeckhoven studied under his father, the sculptor Barthélemy Verboeckhoven (1759-1840). The artist was particularly celebrated for his landscape and animal paintings, with the present work, depicting animals resting in a striking, sweeping vista, very much exhibiting his skill in both categories. A similar approach is evident in paintings by Verboeckhoven which sold at Lempertz, Cologne, on 17 May 2025, lot 1320 (€5,040), and at Dorotheum, Vienna, on 25 April 2024, lot 608 (€8,450).
