Lot description
Thomas Daniell, RA, and William Daniell, RA, British 1749-1840 and 1769-1837- The stern and rudder of a Far Eastern boat; black chalk on laid paper, 15.6 x 17.7 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: After completing his studies at the Royal Academy Schools, Thomas Daniell travelled to India, spending 8 years (1786-94) touring the sub-continent with his nephew William, with both artists working together to produce illustrations of the landscapes and people they encountered there. Comparable, though more fully worked, boat studies by Thomas Daniell sold at Christie's, London, on 23 September 2010, lot 128 (£1,000). The present work is likely a Chinese boat, though is not a typical junk stern.
