Lot description

Dirk Langendijk, Dutch 1748-1805- A battle scene in the Napoleonic Wars; pencil and watercolour heightened with touches of white on paper, signed and dated 'D. Langedijk / delin et fecit 1804.' (lower left), 16 x 23.5 cm. Provenance: with J. Vaz Dias, N. Spiegelstraat 72, Amsterdam. Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is characteristic of the battle scenes produced by Dirk Langendijk, whose drawings are also close in execution to those of his son, Jan Anthonie Langendijk (1780-1818), and are often only distinguished by their signatures, with the latter signing 'J A Langendijk'. Similar drawings by Langendijk include those which sold at Venduehuis den Haag, The Hague, on 13 May 2013, lot 245 (€1,200 hammer); AAG, Amsterdam, on 12 November 2012, lot 69 (€1,792); and Sotheby's, Amsterdam, on 4 November 2003, lot 134 (€4,880).
