Lot description

Giuseppe Diamantini, Italian 1621-1705- Allegory with mythological figures; etching on laid paper, inscribed 'Frans. Balans. Ex' (within the plate, lower right), 29.9 x 22.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Diamantini trained in Bologna under Giovanni Andrea Sirani (1610-1670), and went on to become one of the most important Venetian etchers of the late 17th century, developing a style which was heavily influenced by the approach of Simone Cantarini (1612-1648). The iconography of the present scene has not been fully clarified, but figures such as Hercules (left foreground, with his back turned to the viewer) can be identified, as well as Urania, possibly, to his left, and Io, with the heifer, in the centre.
