Lot description

Emilio Amero (Mexican 1901-1976) The Gesture 1948 The Trial Proof lithograph is inscribed as such lower left, and signed and dated by the artist in pencil below the image lower right. This enigmatic image is a rare find on the market, but held in numerous museum collections, some in color, some in black-and-white. It was exhibited at the Northwest Printmakers 20th Annual Exhibition in 1948 and according to an inscription verso, won the gold medal at the International exhibition of color prints at the Cleveland Institute. Today it is held by the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Seattle Art Museum. This marks the first appearance of The Gesture at auction. No record of this striking image having ever appeared at auction could be found searching auction record databases going back 30-plus years. Emilio Amero was a Mexican-born painter, muralist, printmaker, photographer, filmmaker, and educator. A contemporary of Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco, he was part of the first generation of Mexican muralists before coming to the United States around 1925. In New York, he worked as an illustrator for The New Yorker and Life magazine. In 1946, he joined the faculty of the University of Oklahoma in Norman, where he established a nationally respected printmaking program and taught for more than two decades. Provenance: This print is from the estate of the Oklahoma artist and educator Leonard Phelps Good. Image measures 12.5 x 10, sheet is 15 x 12, and frame is 16 x 14 inches.
