Lot description

Alexander Canedo (1902-1978) Untitled (Male Nude Figure Studies) Mid 20th Century The work of trompe-l'œil technique depicts a tattered sheet of paper with curling edges tacked to an undefined, somewhat surreal surface. Sanguine sketches of male nude figures are on the sheet that hangs over a disappearing ledge and a loosely folded cloth. The work is signed lower right front. Alexander Canedo was a Mexican American painter and illustrator associated with the surrealism and magic realism art movements of the mid-20th century. As an illustrator he created covers for pulp magazines like Astounding Science Fiction throughout the 1940s. As an artist, he is best known for his figurative, surrealist-imagery that blends dreamlike symbolism with meticulous realism. Information on a companion piece by Canedo lists participation in art exhibits annually from 1928 to 1966 and quotes of critical acclaim. Board measures 20 x 20 with a framed size of 29.25 x 29.25 inches.
