Chaibia TALLAL (Morocco 1929 - 2004) Crouching figure Gouache on paper 42 x 30 cm Signed lower center CHAIBIA Created in the early 1970s. *** Gouache on paper, signed lower center CHAIBIA. Painted in the early 1970s (16½ × 11¾ in.) We thank Madame Rabia Aroussi for confirming the authenticity of this work. Figure accroupie belongs to Chaïbia's early years, around 1970, a seminal period when her language was consolidating. The black-framed silhouettes, bold colors and frontal positioning of the figures create an immediately recognizable universe. It was this early body of work, noticed by critic and collector Pierre Gaudibert in the 1970s, that established the artist's international reputation. A self-taught artist born in Chtouka in 1929, Chaïbia Tallal began painting in the early 1960s, under the guidance of her son Hossein Tallal. From 1966 onwards, she exhibited in Casablanca and Paris, before showing her work in major international institutions (Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Palais des Nations in Geneva, Museum of African Art in New York). A tutelary figure of naïve, popular Moroccan painting, his work - inspired by rural life and Moroccan women - bears witness to an unrivalled expressive vitality.
