Lot description

This offset lithographic print on paper, titled Surrender at Appomattox, is after the original work by American illustrator Tom Lovell. The scene depicts the historic surrender of General Robert E. Lee to General Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Lee is shown seated at a desk on the left side of the composition accompanied by his aide-de-camp, while Grant is seated at a smaller table on the right, surrounded by several Union officers. The print features a printed artist signature in the lower right corner of the image. The lower right margin contains a printed copyright reading 1986 National Geographic Society. The lower center margin is titled SURRENDER AT APPOMATTOX / April 9, 1865. The work is professionally housed in a dark-stained wood frame with a double mat in gray and navy blue under glass. The reverse is sealed with a dust cover and retains a gallery label from Carriage House Gallery.
